When searching with this option, your file index is included in the search. In short, that includes EVERY file on your hard drive. With a newly installed Vista, I noticed this took entirely too long. You can speed up the process a little. You can manually change the range that the search option digs through, therefore decreasing the search time. I've got two ways this can be done:
1. Via Start Button (No Registry Involvement)
> Right-click on the Windows Logo and select Properties.
> Select the Customize button.
> Remove the check from Search Communications.
> Set Search Files to not search for files.
> Click OK.
2. Registry Edit
> Open registry editor using regedit in the Command Prompt
> Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer and select Advanced.
> Right click on Start_SearchFiles and select Modify.
> Change the Value to 0.
> Reboot the computer
I have tested both on Vista Ultimate and both were effective.
